SAMBO

History of SAMBO

SAMBO, an acronym for the Russian term ‘SAMooborona Bez Oroezhia’ (Самооборона Без Оружия), meaning ‘self-defence without weapons’, has its origins in the Soviet Union. The 15 republics that formed the Union at the time each had their own unique wrestling and fighting techniques. SAMBO is the result of the fusion of these diverse styles, making it a versatile and dynamic martial art.

What is SAMBO?

SAMBO is an advanced martial art and combat sport developed by the Soviet Red Army in the early 1920s. Its aim was to improve soldiers’ hand-to-hand combat skills. The sport shares strong similarities with judo and jiu-jitsu, but also offers a wider arsenal of techniques, including various wrestling forms and self-defence systems. This versatility makes SAMBO a perfect choice for both self-defence and sports performance.
